IREG Meeting on Academic Ranking in Humanities and Social Sciences
organized by:
IREG International Observatory on Academic Rankings and Excellence

in collaboration with/support of:
Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities/SWPS
Orange Foundation

8-9 March 2010, Warsaw, Poland

Location: Hotel Novotel Warsaw-Centrum

Undertaking of ranking of institutions and programs in social science and humanities presents an inherent problem of those undertaking such rankings foremost due to lack of adequate criteria and verifiable information, especially at the international level. At the same time for historical as well as contemporary reasons to give a rightful recognition of those activities when assessing quality of higher education. This is even timelier in the context of the growing attention given to ranking. It is it in this general context that IREG International Observatory has selected this issue as one of its on-going activities. The forthcoming meeting is the first concrete action in this area.

The IREG Meeting will examine current approaches recognizing humanities and social science in academic rankings [for example by inclusion of expressions of academic excellence in various domains under humanities and social sciences].  On this basis it is going to formulate concrete measured dimensions which would reflect specificity of research, teaching & learning in humanities and social sciences. Challenges should not be underestimated however taking into consideration increased role academic rankings it is our collective responsibility – those of undertaking rankings as well as academic community to join forces and make appropriate proposals. It is our expectations that presentations and discussions will result in formulation of basic elements for better more inclusive rankings in humanities and social sciences – the Warsaw Perspective on Rankings in Humanities and Social Sciences.

In order to assure a productive outcome of the meeting a number of participants will not exceed 50 persons.
