Nature Index is a database of publications in high quality journals and is regarded as the most rigorous and selective of global rankings. It now includes 177 journals and 1 conference. This year it was expanded to include Social Science and Applied Science journals.
This year’s Research Leaders list shows that Harvard has been replaced by Zhejiang University in the universities category while the Chinese Academy of Sciences continues to lead overall. Chinese domination of high-quality research is now overwhelming. The top twenty institutions include Harvard, Stanford, the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the Max Planck Society, the Helmholz Association of German Research Centres, and fifteen Chinese universities and research centres.
Nature Index also notes that Japan and South Korea have also advanced rapidly since last year and Poland, Czechia, and Hungary have also performed well. Meanwhile several Muslim countries have fallen dramatically, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Malaysia, and Pakistan.
Turning to the category rankings the Chinese Academy of Sciences leads for Applied Sciences, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physical Sciences, while Harvard is first for Health Sciences and Social Sciences.
