The latest Ranking of World Universities (Webometrics) which is published twice a year has been announced. The genuine summary rankings are available at figshare, and the detailed tables are available on application to the Cybermetrics Lab IPP-CSIC, Madrid.
The overall rank is based on three metrics:
Visibility: Number of external inlinks from different networks to main university domain, derived from Majestic (50% weighting)
Excellence: Number of top 10% cited papers in 27 disciplines in 2021-2025, derived from Scimago (40% weighting)
Openness: Number of citations 2021-2025 of institutions with RoR identifier, derived from OpenAlex (10% weighting). Note that OpenAlex has replaced Google Scholar as the source of data on citations because Google has restricted the extraction of data.
Warning
The ranking’s webpage has been discontinued and pages ending in org, online, or com are fakes and universities that cite them will be excluded from the genuine rankings. A total of 224 universities were excluded this year, including Tel Aviv University, the Free University of Berlin, and the University of Pretoria.
The current rankings continue to be dominated by English speaking universities. Harvard is first overall, followed by Stanford, MIT, Oxford, and Washington.
However, there is a difference between leading American and Asian universities when it comes to performance in Visibility and the research metrics. Elite US universities do much better for visibility. For example, MIT is first for Visibility but 32nd for Excellence and 40th for Openness and the University of California Berkeley is 4th for Visibility, 57th for Excellence and 41st for Openness. In contrast Tsinghua University is 90th for Visibility 3rd for Excellence and 4th for Openness. The National University of Singapore is 118th for Visibility, 15th for Excellence and 20th for Openness.
