Shanghai Ranking has published the latest edition of the Best Chinese Universities Ranking (BCUR). The methodology is quite different from Western national and international rankings, and is composed of the following indicators:

  • Teaching and Learning; Freshmen Gaokao scores (30% weighting), Graduate employment rates (10%)
  • Research; Papers in Scopus (10%), Field Weighted Citation Impact (10%), Top 1% Cited Papers (10%), Most cited researchers (10%)
  • Income; Donation income (5%), Research income from industry (5%), Income from technology transfer (5%)
  • International student ratio (5%).

The top five universities are:

1.   Tsinghua University, Beijing

2.   Peking University, Beijing

3.   Zhejiang University, Zhejiang 

4.   Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai

5.   Fudan University, Shanghai.

The BCUR also contains rankings of specialist universities. The top universities in each of these categories are:

  • Medical; Peking Union Medical College
  • Traditional Medicine: Beijing University of Traditional Medicine, 
  • Financial and Economic; Shanghai University of Finance and Economics
  • Language; Beijing Foreign Studies University
  • Political Science and Law; China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing
  • National Universities; Minzu University of China, Beijing
  • Sport Science; Shanghai University of Sport
  • Cooperation; Chinese University of Hong Kong Shenzhen
  • Non-Government; Zhejiang Shuren University
  • Art; Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing.
