The AD Scientific Index is a ranking of research activity produced by Murat Alper and Cihan Döğer, two Turkish medical researchers, which is derived from the Google Scholar database.
There are rankings of H-index, i10 productivity, and citations for scientists, countries, and universities and there are regular updates based on near real-time data.
The Index has just released a report entitled Asia Academic Landscape and Ranking Momentum Report 2026: Institutional Scale, Ranking Dynamics and Disciplinary Performance, that provides an assessment of research and higher education across Asia. The report identifies a variety of development paths including large scale systems such as India and China and compact but excellent ones like Singapore, South Korea, and Israel.
India, followed by Indonesia and China, has the largest number of researchers and institutions although China has the most competitive system based on its position in global rankings.
Mainland China is clearly the overall regional leader for research, although Japan is strong in Medicine, Indonesia in some subjects in the humanities and the social sciences. and Hong Kong in Architecture and Design.
The strongest subject in the Asian region is Engineering and Technology in terms of institutional base, participation, and highly influential research, while Business and Management, the Social Sciences, and Economics & Econometrics show a pattern of broad participation but limited top tier research activity.
