The latest edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings has been announced. These rankings attempt to measure universities’ contribution and commitment to global sustainability and are aligned with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This year’s rankings have introduced several methodological changes that make comparison with previous years difficult. One of these is the use of LLM (AI) to process the data submitted by institutions.
THE reports that it has ranked 2,318 institutions, which is more than the 2,092 ranked universities in the most recent THE world rankings, the 1,501 in the QS world rankings, or the 2,250 in the US News Best Global Universities. They are very popular with universities in countries like India, Iraq and Indonesia, which are represented by 135, 88, and 71 universities.
In contrast, these rankings have been ignored by most elite universities, including the Ivy League, Oxford and Cambridge, the Indian Institutes of Technology, and leading Australian universities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Australian. Chinese participation is extremely limited with exactly eight universities ranked this year.
